Target Information

Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa and have isoelectric points between pH 4.9 and 7.8.

Individual human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20. Various epithelia in the human body express cytokeratins that are characteristic of the epithelium type and related to its degree of maturation or differentiation. Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are increasingly used to distinguish different types of epithelial malignancies.

Cytokeratin antibodies assist in the differential diagnosis of tumors using immunohistochemistry on tissue sections and are also useful tools in cytopathology and flow cytometric assays.
