Background
This gene belongs to the stathmin family and encodes a ubiquitous cytosolic phosphoprotein that integrates regulatory signals within the cellular environment. The encoded protein regulates the microtubule filament system by destabilizing microtubules, preventing their assembly, and promoting disassembly. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Feb 2009).
