Cellular Localization Nucleus and cytoplasm. Found in cytoplasm in inactive form complexed to I-κB. Colocalized with DDX1 in the nucleus upon TNF-α induction and with GFI1 after LPS stimulation. Nuclear translocation impaired during L. monocytogenes infection.
Background NF-κB is a ubiquitous transcription factor involved in various biological processes. It remains inactive in the cytoplasm by binding to specific inhibitors (IκBs). Upon inhibitor degradation, NF-κB translocates to the nucleus to activate gene transcription. NF-κB consists of NFKB1 or NFKB2 bound to REL, RELA, or RELB. The most abundant form is NFKB1 complexed with RELA. Four transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified (RefSeq, Sep 2011).
