Background

Nuclear factor kappa B subunit 1 (NFKB1) is a Homo sapiens gene encoding a 105 kDa protein that can undergo cotranslational processing by the 26S proteasome to produce a 50 kDa protein.
The 105 kDa protein acts as a Rel protein-specific transcription inhibitor, while the 50 kDa protein functions as a DNA-binding subunit of the NF-kappa-B (NFKB) complex.
NFKB is a transcription regulator activated by various stimuli such as cytokines, oxidant-free radicals, UV irradiation, and bacterial or viral products.
Activated NFKB translocates into the nucleus to stimulate gene expression involved in diverse biological functions.
Aberrant activation of NFKB is linked to inflammatory diseases, while persistent inhibition results in improper immune cell development or delayed cell growth.
Alternative splicing leads to multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
