| Cellular Localization | Cell membrane; Single-pass type I membrane protein. Found in cell projections (invadopodium, ruffle, lamellipodium), recycling endosome, melanosome, cleavage furrow, focal adhesion, and cell surface. Isoform 2 does not localize to focal adhesions. Highly enriched in stage I melanosomes. Located on plasma membrane of neuroblastoma NMB7 cells. In lung cancer cell lines, localization varies through mitotic stages, concentrating at the ingressing cleavage furrow by mid-telophase. |
| Background | Integrins are heterodimeric proteins composed of alpha and beta subunits. At least 18 alpha and 8 beta subunits are known in mammals. Integrins act as membrane receptors mediating cell adhesion and recognition in processes such as embryogenesis, hemostasis, tissue repair, immune response, and tumor metastasis. This gene encodes a beta subunit, with multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants producing different isoforms. (RefSeq, Jul 2008) |
