Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a regulatory subunit of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It functions as a key energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Upon metabolic stress, AMPK becomes activated and phosphorylates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), enzymes involved in fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. This beta subunit may positively regulate AMPK activity, and its myristoylation and phosphorylation can influence enzyme activity and subcellular localization. It may also act as an adaptor molecule mediating AMPK complex assembly.
