Background
Kallikreins are a subgroup of serine proteases with diverse physiological functions. Many kallikreins are implicated in carcinogenesis and have potential as novel biomarkers for cancer and other diseases. This gene is one of fifteen kallikrein subfamily members located in tandem on chromosome 19. The encoded protein may participate in proteolytic cascades in the skin and may serve as a biomarker for ovarian cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
