ALDH2는 알데하이드 탈수소효소 단백질군에 속하며, 알코올 대사의 주요 산화 경로에서 두 번째 효소로 작용합니다. 간에는 세포질형과 미토콘드리아형 두 가지 주요 아이소폼이 존재하며, 전기영동 이동도, 반응 속도, 세포 내 위치에 따라 구분됩니다. 대부분의 백인에서는 두 가지 주요 아이소자임이 존재하지만, 약 50%의 아시아인은 미토콘드리아형이 결여된 세포질형만 가지고 있습니다. 이는 아시아인에서 급성 알코올 중독 빈도가 높은 이유와 관련이 있을 수 있습니다.
