Target Information
The IL6ST (also known as CD130 or IL6RB) protein acts as a signal transducer shared by multiple cytokines, including IL6, CNTF, LIF, and OSM. It functions as part of the cytokine receptor complex, with activation dependent on cytokine binding. The viral IL6 (vIL6) from Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus can directly activate IL6ST without IL6R. Mouse knockout studies indicate its critical role in regulating myocyte apoptosis. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
