Target Information
Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, encoded by distinct genes. These membrane skeletal proteins participate in the assembly of the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial tissues.
- Alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, while beta adducin is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
- Adducin was first purified from human erythrocytes as a heterodimer of alpha and beta subunits.
- Polymorphisms in these subunits are linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
- Heterodimers of alpha and gamma subunits have also been described.
- Structurally, adducin subunits have a protease-resistant N-terminal domain and a protease-sensitive C-terminal domain containing phosphorylation sites, a calmodulin binding site, and regions required for spectrin-actin association.
- Alternatively spliced gamma adducin isoforms exist, though their specific functions remain unclear.
