Target Information
The protein encoded by AGT (angiotensinogen precursor) is expressed in the liver and cleaved by renin when blood pressure drops. The resulting angiotensin I is further processed by angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) to produce angiotensin II, a key regulator of blood pressure.
Mutations in this gene are linked to essential hypertension, renal tubular dysgenesis, atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
