Target Information

BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that functions to either inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family can dimerize to modulate apoptosis. For instance, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak are involved in cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis.
Constitutive expression of BCL2, such as through translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. Overexpression of BCL-2 is linked to various human cancers, including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer. Two transcript variants exist, differing at their C-terminal ends.
