Target Information
The SERPINC1 gene encodes a plasma protease inhibitor belonging to the serpin superfamily. It inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases of the coagulation system, regulating the blood coagulation cascade.
This protein contains two functional domains:
- Heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus
- Reactive site domain at the C-terminus
The inhibitory activity is enhanced by heparin. Over 120 mutations have been identified in this gene, many of which are associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
