Target Information
Human Rap1 is the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. HRap1 is located at telomeres and regulates telomere length through recruitment by TRF2 rather than direct binding. The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399-amino-acid protein (~47 kDa) that does not interact with TRF1.
TRF2, a ubiquitously expressed protein with a Myb-related DNA-binding motif, binds duplex TTAGGG repeats and localizes to all human telomeres. TRF2 helps maintain telomere terminal structure and prevents senescence in primary human cells. Inhibition of TRF2 induces apoptosis in certain mammalian cell types.
