Target Information

The CTSL gene encodes a lysosomal cysteine proteinase involved in intracellular protein catabolism.
Its substrates include collagen, elastin, and alpha-1 protease inhibitor, which regulates neutrophil elastase activity.
CTSL is implicated in myofibril necrosis, myocardial ischemia, and renal tubular response to proteinuria.
This protein is part of the peptidase C1 family and forms a disulfide-linked dimer of heavy and light chains derived from a single precursor.
At least two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
