Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene regulates pancreatic beta-cell function and is similar to the mouse JIP-1 protein, a known regulator of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (MAPK8). It inhibits MAPK8-mediated transcription factor activation and reduces IL-1 beta and MEKK1-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, it acts as a DNA-binding transactivator of the glucose transporter GLUT2. REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) represses its expression in insulin-secreting beta cells. Mutations in this gene have been linked to type 2 diabetes susceptibility.
