Target Information
Human Rap1 is the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. HRap1 is located at telomeres and influences telomere length by being recruited via TRF2 rather than directly binding to telomeric DNA.
The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399 amino acid protein (~47 kDa) that does not interact with TRF1. TRF2, a ubiquitously expressed protein, binds duplex TTAGGG repeats and localizes to telomeres in metaphase chromosomes. TRF2 helps maintain telomere structure and prevents cellular senescence. Inhibition of TRF2 can induce apoptosis in certain mammalian cells.
