Target Information
Human Rap1 was the first identified ortholog of the yeast telomeric protein scRap1, sharing three conserved sequence motifs. HRap1 is located at telomeres and influences telomere length by being recruited by TRF2 rather than directly binding telomeric DNA. The hRap1 cDNA encodes a 399-amino-acid protein (~47 kDa). hRap1 does not interact with TRF1.
TRF2, a ubiquitously expressed protein, regulates telomere length and binds duplex TTAGGG repeats. It helps maintain telomere structure and prevents senescence in primary human cells. Inhibition of TRF2 can induce apoptosis in certain mammalian cell types.
