Target Information
The lysozyme gene encodes a human enzyme that hydrolyzes the β(1–4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan. Lysozyme acts as an antimicrobial agent found in human milk, spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears. Missense mutations in the LYZ gene have been associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
