Target Information
The SEPT5 gene belongs to the septin family of nucleotide-binding proteins, initially described in yeast as regulators of the cell division cycle. Septins are highly conserved across species such as yeast, Drosophila, and mouse, and play key roles in cytoskeletal organization. Disruption of septin function can impair cytokinesis, leading to multinucleate or polyploid cells.
This gene is located on chromosome 22q11, a region frequently deleted in DiGeorge and velocardiofacial syndromes. Translocations involving SEPT5 and the MLL gene have been observed in acute myeloid leukemia. Two transcripts (2.2 kb and 3.5 kb) have been identified, differing in polyadenylation site usage. An alternatively spliced variant with a distinct 5′ end has also been reported.
