Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that is a member of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) protein family. It functions similarly to ubiquitin by binding to target proteins as part of a post-translational modification system. Unlike ubiquitin, which targets proteins for degradation, SUMO proteins are involved in various cellular processes such as nuclear transport, transcriptional regulation, apoptosis, and protein stability. Activation requires cleavage of the last two amino acids at the carboxy-terminus. Multiple pseudogenes and alternative splicing variants have been reported.
