Target Information
Immunity-related GTPases (IRG, also known as p47 GTPases) are a family of GTPase proteins found in vertebrates, playing critical roles in innate resistance to intracellular pathogens. IRG genes are present in mammals and lower species including mice, rats, zebrafish, and humans.
In humans, two IRG genes have been identified: IRGC and IRGM.
- IRGC encodes a full-length IRG protein constitutively expressed in testis.
- IRGM encodes a truncated protein expressed in cultured cells, including macrophage lines.
Unlike mouse IRG genes, human IRGC and IRGM are not controlled by interferon (IFN), suggesting that the IFN-mediated resistance mechanism seen in mice may be absent in humans.
