Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipose cells secrete physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted by adipocytes. It may play a role in type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Studies indicate that serum resistin levels are elevated in obese, diabetic mice, antagonizing insulin activity.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and is influenced by coactivators CBP and p300 through histone acetylation. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
