Target Information
CCR2 is a chemokine receptor that regulates monocyte/macrophage trafficking and is upregulated during inflammation. Polymorphisms in CCR2 may be associated with resistance to HIV-1 infection or delayed progression to AIDS. Its ligand, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP-1), is produced by endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages, and mediates monocyte infiltration in inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, alveolitis, and tumor infiltration. Two isoforms are generated by alternative splicing. CCR2 expression has been reported across various tissues including blood, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lung, ovary, pancreas, spinal cord, spleen, thymus, and vessels. Increased CCR2 expression has been observed in CD3+ lymphocytes in rheumatoid arthritis.
