Target Information
Calbindin-D-28K (also known as vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding protein or cholecalcin) is a highly conserved 28 kDa calcium-binding protein with broad tissue distribution. It belongs to the family of low molecular weight calcium-binding proteins (CaBPs), which includes calmodulin, S-100, parvalbumin, and troponin C. These proteins share homologous EF-hand structural motifs for Ca²⁺ binding.
Calbindin-D-28K is predominantly expressed in specific subpopulations of neurons within the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in epithelial cells involved in Ca²⁺ transport, such as distal tubular and cortical collecting duct cells of the kidney, and enteric neuroendocrine cells.
