Target Information
Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins that perform multiple functions in both excitable and non-excitable cells. One class, the large conductance calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K+), is activated by both intracellular calcium increases and membrane depolarization. This dual activation is enabled by its structure: a Maxi K+ alpha homotetramer containing both a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium binding domain. In vascular smooth muscle, a beta-subunit associates in a 1:1 ratio, reducing the calcium concentration required to open the channel by 5–10 fold.
