Target Information

Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They function as iron-binding transport proteins, capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin transports iron from absorption and degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. Under normal conditions, about one-third of total blood transferrin contains bound iron. Measurement of transferrin levels serves as an indicator of iron-carrying capacity and can reveal abnormalities in iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also stimulate cell proliferation.
