Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that acts as a signaling molecule between cells. It is involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity through cellular responses to NO. NO production is mediated by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which catalyze the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO. Three NOS isoforms have been identified: neuronal NOS (nNOS, type I), endothelial NOS (eNOS, type III), and inducible NOS (iNOS, type II). All isoforms contain calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
