Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that carries messages between cells. It plays roles in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. NO production is mediated by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which catalyze the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO.
There are three NOS isoforms:
- Neuronal NOS (nNOS, type I)
- Endothelial NOS (eNOS, type III)
- Inducible NOS (iNOS, type II)
All NOS isoforms contain calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
