Target Information

Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and angiogenic factor.
IL-8 expression and secretion are induced by inflammatory stimuli in various cells including macrophages and endothelial cells. In endothelial cells, IL-8 is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.
Originally isolated from osteosarcoma cells, IL-8 contains the ELR motif (N-terminal Glu-Leu-Arg sequence) and signals through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors.
Previous names include neutrophil activating protein 1 (NAP-1), granulocyte chemotactic protein 1 (GCP-1), monocyte-derived neutrophil-activating peptide (MONAP), and protein 3-10C.
IL-8 and other CXC chemokines form a gene cluster on chromosome 4q. Studies show IL-8 plays roles in tumor angiogenesis and growth, and in the pathogenesis of bronchiolitis caused by viral infection.
