Target Information
C-reactive protein (CRP) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of approximately 24 kDa. CRP is synthesized by the liver, and its plasma concentration increases dramatically during inflammatory processes.
CRP functions as an initiator of the classical complement cascade and binds to various nuclear components such as chromatin and histones. It plays a crucial role in innate immunity and mediates pre-immune host defense mechanisms. CRP levels can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and may function as a scavenger during cell necrosis. Elevated CRP levels are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
