Target Information

HSP70 is a heat shock protein expressed in response to various biological stresses, including high temperatures. Major HSP families include HSP70, HSP90, and HSP100. The HSP70 family consists of highly conserved proteins induced by diverse stress conditions in all organisms studied.

Human HSP70 family members include:

• HSP70: Strongly inducible in all organisms, constitutively expressed in primate cells.
• HSP72: 72 kDa protein induced exclusively under stress conditions.
• HSC70 (cognate protein): 72 kDa constitutively expressed protein involved in uncoating clathrin-coated vesicles.
• GRP78 (BiP): 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum.
• p75 (HSP75): 75 kDa protein found within mitochondria.

HSP70 is encoded by an intronless gene and, together with other heat shock proteins, stabilizes existing proteins against aggregation and assists in folding newly translated proteins in the cytosol and organelles. It also participates in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway through interaction with AU-rich element RNA-binding protein 1. The HSP70 gene is located in the major histocompatibility complex class III region, clustered with two closely related genes encoding similar proteins.
