Target Information
In response to adverse environmental changes, cells increase expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs).
HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1, also known as HSP27) is a small heat shock protein functioning as a molecular chaperone, maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state.
It plays roles in stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates biological processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins.
Mutations in HSPB1 can lead to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy 2B.
