Target Information
Oncostatin M (OSM) is a growth and differentiation factor involved in neurogenesis, osteogenesis, and hematopoiesis.
Produced by activated T cells, monocytes, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells, OSM can exert both stimulatory and inhibitory effects on cell proliferation. It:
- Stimulates proliferation of fibroblasts, smooth muscle cells, and Kaposi’s sarcoma cells
- Inhibits growth of certain normal and tumor cell lines
- Promotes cytokine release (IL-6, GM-CSF, G-CSF) from endothelial cells
- Enhances expression of LDL receptors in hepatoma cells
OSM shares structural and functional similarities with LIF, IL-6, and CNTF.
