Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are identified and categorized into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and serves as a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic CK types are expressed in all epithelial cells.
