Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is believed to be involved in the intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFP proteins, vimentin is expressed, along with desmin, during the early stages of cellular development. During development, vimentin is replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin has been implicated in the regulation of steroid synthesis through its role as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase induces breakdown of intermediate filaments and activates contractile events dependent on ATP and myosin light chain. This facilitates cytoskeletal rearrangements that promote lipid droplet–mitochondria interactions and subsequent cholesterol transport, enhancing steroid synthesis.
