Product Specific Information

This antibody reacts with an extracellular antigen of both cell surface-expressed and soluble forms of CD44 antigen (Phagocyte glycoprotein 1), an 80–95 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein of the hyaladherin family. It is expressed on most cells and tissues (leukocytes, endothelial cells, mesenchymal cells, etc.), and is negative on platelets and hepatocytes.


Target Information

CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast.
Several isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform detected in many normal tissues. CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in:

  • Cell-cell interactions
  • Cell adhesion and migration
  • Lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing

CD44 expression is often up-regulated in certain carcinomas and may be associated with metastatic potential. It is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 in response to stimulation.
Alternative splicing produces many functionally distinct isoforms, contributing to CD44’s structural and functional diversity. Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be related to tumor metastasis formation.
