Target Information
In response to environmental stress, cells increase the expression of heat shock or stress proteins. HSPB1 (heat shock protein beta-1, also known as HSP27) is a small heat shock protein that functions as a molecular chaperone, maintaining denatured proteins in a folding-competent state. It contributes to stress resistance and actin organization, and regulates processes such as phosphorylation and axonal transport of neurofilament proteins. Mutations in the HSPB1 gene can cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2F and distal hereditary motor neuronopathy type 2B.
