Target Information

Several proteins are prenylated and methylated at their carboxyl-terminal ends. Prenylation, initially considered important only for membrane attachment, also plays a role in protein-protein interactions.
The only nuclear proteins known to be prenylated in mammalian cells are prelamin A- and B-type lamins. Prelamin A undergoes farnesylation and carboxymethylation at the cysteine residue of a CaaX motif, which is later removed during maturation to lamin A.
The protein encoded by the NARF gene binds to the prenylated prelamin A carboxyl-terminal tail domain and may form part of a prelamin A endoprotease complex. It localizes to the nucleus and partially colocalizes with the nuclear lamina. NARF shares limited sequence similarity with iron-only bacterial hydrogenases.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, including one generated by RNA editing.
