Target Information
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) directly bind to nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and play a key role in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs. The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of four abundant hnRNPs that bind avidly to poly(G) and poly(U) RNA homopolymers. These M proteins belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family, showing similarity to RNA-binding proteins from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. They possess a methionine/arginine-rich hexapeptide repeat motif (MR repeat) similar to the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in 3′-end maturation of pre-mRNAs. Proteins immunologically related to M exist across eukaryotes from human to yeast.
