CD49f (Integrin alpha-6, ITGA6) is an integrin alpha chain protein that forms part of integrin receptors involved in cell adhesion and signaling.
- Integrins are composed of alpha and beta subunits, forming structural and functional linkages between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and intracellular cytoskeletal proteins.
- Alpha 6 can pair with beta 4 (forming TSP180) or beta 1 (forming VLA-6).
- These complexes mediate intracellular signaling affecting cell shape, mobility, and cell cycle progression.
- CD49f is predominantly expressed in epithelial cells and plays a structural role in hemidesmosomes.
- Over 18 alpha and 8 beta subunits with multiple splice variants have been identified in mammals.
- Integrins also mediate cell-cell adhesion through interactions with ICAMs, promoting cell aggregation.
