Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid long protein hormone that plays a key role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. It is approximately 16 kDa in mass and encoded by the obese (ob) gene. Leptin is mainly secreted by adipocytes, correlating with total body fat mass, and in smaller amounts by stomach epithelium and placenta cells.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions that regulate appetite, body temperature, and energy expenditure, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells. The hormone influences food intake, energy expenditure, adiposity, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth. It has been studied in the context of obesity, anorexia nervosa, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Leptin also regulates thermogenesis and fatty acid oxidation enzymes. Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in both rodents and humans.
