SUMO2는 SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) 단백질 패밀리의 구성원으로, 단백질의 번역 후 변형(post-translational modification) 과정에서 표적 단백질에 결합합니다.
유비퀴틴이 단백질 분해를 유도하는 것과 달리, SUMO2는 핵 내 수송, 전사 조절, 세포사멸(apoptosis), 단백질 안정성 등 다양한 세포 과정에 관여합니다.
척추동물에서 SUMO 패밀리는 SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3 세 가지가 있으며, SUMO2와 SUMO3는 SUMO1과 기능적으로 구별됩니다.
SUMO2 및 SUMO3의 N-말단 영역에 존재하는 SUMO 변형 부위는 SAE1/SAE2 (SUMO E1) 및 Ubc9 (SUMO E2)에 의해 인식되어 폴리머 사슬을 형성할 수 있습니다.
