MREG probably functions as a cargo-recognition protein that couples cytoplasmic vesicles to the transport machinery.
It plays a role in hair pigmentation by mediating melanosome transport between melanocytes and keratinocytes.
Functions as a receptor for RILP and DCTN1 complexes on melanosomes, contributing to retrograde transport.
Overexpression leads to accumulation of late endosomes/lysosomes at the microtubule organizing center (MTOC).
Binds cholesterol and specific phosphatidylinositol phosphates, required for microtubule-mediated organelle transport.
Essential for normal phagosome clearance and lysosomal enzyme activation in retinal pigment epithelium cells (PubMed:19240024).
Involved in degradation of A2E in the eye and may regulate membrane fusion and photoreceptor disk biogenesis.
