Target Information

This gene encodes a testis-specific differentiation antigen, acrosomal vesicle protein 1, which arises within the acrosomal vesicle during spermatogenesis. It is associated with the acrosomal membranes and matrix of mature sperm. The gene consists of four exons, and alternative splicing generates multiple distinct transcripts encoding protein isoforms ranging from 81 to 265 amino acids.

The longest transcript is the most abundant (53–72% of total), followed by the second (15–32%), third (3.4–8.3%), and fourth (8.7–12.5%) largest transcripts. Remaining transcripts represent less than 1% of total messages. Cryptic splicing and exon skipping phenomena are suggested to occur within this gene. Acrosomal vesicle protein 1 may be involved in sperm–zona binding or penetration and is considered a potential contraceptive vaccine immunogen for humans.
