Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog is myf3) can induce muscle cell differentiation or activate otherwise silent muscle-specific genes in various cell types.
The regulatory domain of MyoD includes a 70-amino acid region containing a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Three additional genes share sequence homology with the basic HLH domain of MyoD: myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4/herculin).
