Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog: myf3) can induce muscle cell differentiation or activate muscle-specific genes in various cell types.
The regulatory domain of MyoD contains a 70 amino acid region with a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Related genes with similar HLH domains include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (MRF4/herculin).
