Target Information
ROM1 is a member of a photoreceptor-specific gene family encoding an integral membrane protein found in the photoreceptor disk rim of the eye. It can form homodimers or heterodimers with retinal degeneration slow (RDS). ROM1 is essential for disk morphogenesis and may function as an adhesion molecule involved in stabilization and compaction of outer segment disks or maintenance of rim curvature. Mutations in this gene are associated with retinitis pigmentosa.
