Target Information
PBGD (porphobilinogen deaminase), also known as hydroxymethylbilane synthase, is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the heme synthesis pathway. PBGD belongs to the HMBS family. Deficiency of PBGD leads to errors in pyrrole metabolism, causing acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), an inherited autosomal disorder characterized by acute neurological dysfunctions, hypertension, tachycardia, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, and elevated aminolevulinic acid and porphobilinogen levels in urine.
