Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It acts as a molecular chaperone involved in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides. Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptors and B cell membrane immunoglobulins, but not with completed receptor complexes. It functions to retain incompletely or improperly folded proteins within the ER.
Unlike soluble ER resident proteins containing the KDEL sequence, integral membrane proteins like calnexin lack this motif but possess positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER retention. Calnexin consists of a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
